Background of the Study:
Institutional repositories are critical in enhancing the visibility and accessibility of scholarly research. At Federal University, Gashua, these repositories serve as centralized platforms for archiving research outputs, including journal articles, conference papers, and theses (Chukwuma, 2023). By making such materials openly available, institutional repositories facilitate greater dissemination and citation of academic work, thereby increasing the overall research profile of the institution. With the increasing need for transparency and reproducibility in research, these repositories are pivotal in ensuring that quality research reaches a global audience. However, challenges such as low submission rates, inadequate metadata quality, and limited awareness among researchers can compromise their potential impact (Eze, 2024). This study examines how institutional repositories contribute to research visibility, while also investigating the factors that inhibit their full utilization. The goal is to propose actionable recommendations that will enhance the performance and efficiency of these digital archives, ensuring optimal visibility and academic recognition (Onoh, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the established benefits of institutional repositories in increasing research visibility, Federal University, Gashua faces challenges related to low researcher engagement and underutilization of these platforms. Contributing factors include insufficient awareness among academics, lack of standard submission protocols, and limited technical support for repository management. As a result, many valuable research outputs remain inaccessible or poorly indexed, which undermines the objective of increasing scholarly visibility. This study aims to identify these constraints and propose strategies to improve repository usage and research dissemination (Uche, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the effect of institutional repositories on research visibility.
To identify factors limiting repository utilization.
To suggest improvements to enhance research dissemination through repositories.
Research Questions:
How do institutional repositories affect research visibility at Federal University, Gashua?
What factors contribute to low utilization of these repositories?
What strategies can improve repository performance and researcher engagement?
Significance of the Study:
This study provides essential insights into the role of institutional repositories in amplifying research visibility. The outcomes will guide improvements in repository management and engagement strategies, thereby increasing the reach and impact of academic research (Nwosu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to investigating the effect of institutional repositories on research visibility at Federal University, Gashua, and does not consider external repository platforms or comparative institutional studies.
Definitions of Terms:
Institutional Repositories: Digital archives that store and share an institution’s research outputs.
Research Visibility: The extent to which research outputs are discoverable and cited.
Engagement: The active participation of researchers in utilizing repository services.
